EVALUATION QUESTION 1 - IN WHAT WAYS DO YOUR MEDIA PRODUCTS USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA TEXTS?

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH

Prior to actually creating my media products, or planning them, I had to conduct a lot of research into existing music videos, digipaks and magazine advertisements. I researched the codes and conventions  of these products. A convention is the way that something is usually done. If a product is conventional, it sticks to the sort of ‘rules’ that have been created and they are easily recognisable to the audience. There are certain conventions to different forms of media, and there are different conventions of different genres. Below is the research and planning I have done of the codes and conventions:

EVALUATION QUESTION 2 - HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND YOUR ANCILLARY TEXTS?

Below is a presentation of how my products work together. I have included an analysis of how I have created  continuity between my music video and magazine advertisement to ensure that they work together as a promotional package for the digipak:

As well of my own analysis, I have also included a survey from evaluation question 2. I have included this as some of the questions relate to the way that my final products work together:

EVALUATION QUESTION 3 - WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

1ST - 3RD ANCILLARY TEXT DRAFT FEEDBACK

Below is a presentation of my 1st - 3rd draft feedback. I have included a brief overview of my audience and their role in my product, along with an overview of the use of audience feedback and why it is important. In each draft I have included images and videos of my texts, with how I improved it from my feedback for the previous draft, and then my feedback for that draft, which tells me how to improve it:

FINAL DRAFT FEEDBACK

Here are my final drafts:

I decided to do my feedback for my final drafts seperately from the others, and in combination with one another. I have created a survey which I printed out and gave to as many people that I could from my target audience. After I recieved my feedback, I realised that the majority of them were the same and shared similar opinions, so I entered some of the responses into Survey Monkey so that they could be grouped together and seen in relation to one another. I have analysed these responses in the PowerPoint below:

To conclude, I found my audience feedback was crutial in the construction of my media products. It helped me to constantly improve my products and appeal to my audience. Without audience feedback, I would not have known what my audience like and dislike about my products, therefor I wouldn’t have known how to target my products at them.

EVALUATION QUESTION 4 - HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE RESEARCH AND PLANNING PLANNING, CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION STAGES?

New media technologies are digital technologies, such as Microsoft Word, etc. I have used a wide variety of new media technologies across all stages.

PLANNING AND RESEARCH & EVALUATION

I had to conduct a lot of planning and research in order to create my own products and ensure that they were successful. In my planning and research, I have used a very large range of softwares and websites, etc. which are pictured below. I have also used some of these softwares and websites in my evaluation.

Here is a prezi of the ways that I have used these softwares and websites:

CONSTRUCTION

After my research and planning, I had to actually construct my products. I used several different softwares, hardwares and websites in my construction, which are featured in the moodboard below:

I have also created a prezi to show how I have used these softwares, websites and hardwares in my construction stages:

Time Lapse Filming

I decided to film a timelapse of the sky for my music video, as I felt that it went with the lyrics of my song. The sky is constantly changing, and it is never the same, so it is ‘unsteady’.

At the time of filming this timelapse, I didn’t have a tripod, so I had to improvise. I set up my camera on the window will, ontop of a book box set with the lense propped up by an eyeshadow palette. Though this set up was very unconvnetional, it worked very well considering.

Here is a video of the timelapse that I created:

Audience Profile Reserch

WHAT IS AN AUDIENCE PROFILE?

An audience profile is exactly as it says. It is a profile of the target audience, built up of factors such as age, class, gender, ethnicity, demographics, etc.  Below is an example of an audience profile, by the magazine NME:

THE IMPORTANCE OF AN AUDIENCE PROFILE

It is used to allow the institution/band better knowledge of their audience, so that they can appropriately target their product.

GENDER - The gender of an audience is very important when constructing a product. If the  audience are predominately male, and the products are too ‘feminine’, they may not enjoy it, and therefore won’t consume either of the other products along side of it. This is the same for if an audience was largely female and the product had more stereotypically masculine content.
AGE - Knowing your audience’s age is also crucial in constructing your products, as different age groups have different interests and different styles. If the content of the products is out of the age range of the audience, they will not be able to connect with it, and therefore they won’t continue to consume products created by that institution/artist.
SOCIAL CLASS - Social class is one of the most important factors, when it comes to the accessability of your products to the audience. Factors like will they be able to consume your music video, and will they be able to afford to buy your digipak need to be taken into consideration. Also, the price of the magazine that you are advertising your digipak in is important. If your products are out of the budget of your audience, they will not be able to consume them, therefore your products won’t actually reach your target audience.

Along with these factors, the audience’s interests, which will have been identified in the psychographics research of your audience, need to be considered. You should know whether they actually listen to music, if they buy albums, etc.

Knowing all of these helps institutions to target their audience appropriately and create products that their audience will actually enjoy and consume.

Magazine Advertisement Third Draft

Here is a re-draft of my magazine advert, using several of the photos that I took. I will be asking my target audience the photo that they prefer.

Re-shooting Digipak & Advertisement Images

The images of my digipak and advertisement didn’t work effectively in representing the Indie Rock genre, as the mise-en-scene and cinematography weren’t conventional, which I found out from my focus groups. Therefore, I decided to re-shoot my images, and use a band, which I initially did’t want to do. I found a location that I liked, and here are some of the images that I took.
